A computer holds what a mind cannot: it stores, sorts, retrieves and occasionally loses. It is also a screen the dreamer works in front of rather than in. As dream material it is read as an image of memory kept outside the body, of thought organised into files, and of the uneasy question of what happens to the parts that were entrusted to it.
The image is unusually literal about mental function. Storage, search, corruption, the file that cannot be opened — each has an obvious counterpart in how remembering actually behaves. Readings often treat the screen as a second mind: something that shows the dreamer their own contents from the outside, in a form they can scroll through but not always alter.

Sitting before the screen for a long stretch, the room around it unnoticed
Absorption in the screen while the surrounding room fades is read as attention narrowed to a single lit rectangle. It is often taken to signify a period in which the dreamer's world has contracted to the work in front of them. Readings differ on the tone: some treat it as concentration, others as a life conducted at one remove from the room it is happening in.
Action
Searching through folders, unable to locate what is needed
Descending through directories that do not contain the thing is read as the structure of the dreamer's own organisation turned against them. It is generally taken to signify a sense that everything has been kept and nothing can be found. Some readings emphasise that the search itself is the activity, and that the dream rarely ends in retrieval.
Deleting files, or clearing the machine out
Removing stored material deliberately is read as active discarding rather than loss. Some readings treat it as relief, the shedding of things kept only because keeping was easier. A different line attends to hesitation: what the dreamer paused over before deleting is often held to matter more than what went quickly.
Feeling
The machine is slow, frozen, or will not respond to input
A computer that ignores the keyboard places the obstruction between intention and execution. It is commonly read as mental sluggishness given an external form — thinking that will not keep pace with what is being asked of it. One line of interpretation attaches this to fatigue; a different line reads the freeze as refusal, a part of the dreamer declining to process further.
Outcome
Work lost, unsaved, or vanished after hours of effort
Losing what was made is read as effort that left no trace — not failure of ability, but failure of the thing to persist. It is often taken to signify a fear that what the dreamer has built is not held anywhere durable. Readings sometimes note that this form recurs in people whose work is largely invisible, and produces no object at the end of the day.

A file that will not open, or cannot be found
A document known to exist and refusing to open is among the most telling forms of this image. It is commonly read as material the dreamer possesses without access — something remembered as being there, unreachable now. One line of interpretation treats this as ordinary forgetting given a mechanism. A different line emphasises that the file was not deleted, holding that the content is intact and something is standing between the dreamer and it.
The blank document, the cursor waiting
An empty screen with nothing typed is read as capacity confronted by the absence of anything to put in it. The tool is ready; the dreamer is not. Some readings connect it to creative stalling. Another line reads the blankness more kindly, as a space deliberately kept open before it is committed to any single use.
Reading one's own files, messages or old work on the screen
Encountering your own stored material is read as meeting a former version of yourself in a form you cannot argue with. The screen holds exactly what was written, unrevised by memory. It is often taken to signify reckoning with a record — sometimes a comfort, sometimes an unwelcome accuracy.
