An airplane carries you at speed over ground you never touch, on a course you do not set, and it cannot be left partway. Distance that would take weeks collapses into hours. As dream material it is read as an image of large, fast transition undertaken in someone else's hands — the leap between one part of a life and another, made by surrender rather than by steering.
Two features do most of the work here. The first is passivity: the passenger is entirely committed once the doors close, which makes the image suited to changes already set in motion. The second is the waiting that surrounds it — the terminal, the gate, the queue. Readings often note that far more of this dream is spent on the ground than in the air, and that the ground portion is usually the anxious one.

Stuck in the terminal, delayed, or waiting at the gate
The airport rather than the aircraft is among the most frequently reported settings. It is read as the state of being between: departed from one place and not yet arrived anywhere, with the departure not yet in your control. Delay in particular is often taken to signify a change the dreamer has committed to that has not begun to move, and the peculiar restlessness of luggage already packed.
Looking down at the ground from a great height
The view from altitude flattens what was recently enormous. It is often taken to signify a change in perspective on circumstances the dreamer has just left — the sense that a situation which filled the whole horizon becomes small when seen from far enough away. Readings sometimes attach it to the beginning of detachment rather than to distance already achieved.

Boarding as a passenger and settling into the seat
Taking a seat and handing over control is the base form of the image. It is commonly read as consent to a transition the dreamer has decided on but no longer directs — the choice was made at the ticket counter, not in the air. Some readings emphasise the relief in this, the rest that comes from having nothing left to steer. A different line reads the same stillness as unease at how little remains in the dreamer's hands.
Missing the flight, or running through the airport too late
Arriving after the doors have closed concentrates the image on a window that has shut. One line of interpretation treats it as an opportunity the dreamer fears letting pass. A different line reads the missed departure as ambivalence made visible — some part of the dreamer arranged to be late, because the transition was less wanted than it appeared. The dream rarely settles which.
Piloting the aircraft oneself
Being in the cockpit reverses the defining condition of the image. It is generally read as taking charge of a change of a size the dreamer would ordinarily leave to others. One line of interpretation treats this as confidence and range, while a different line emphasises the burden — that flying oneself means no one else is responsible if the course is wrong.

Shaking in the air is read as a feeling state rather than an event: the discomfort of instability during a passage you cannot pause or exit. It is often taken to signify a change that is proceeding roughly without being off course. Some readings note that the fear tends to be strongest in dreamers who feel the transition is fundamentally right but not fundamentally theirs to manage.

Touching down closes the suspended state and returns the dreamer to ground they must now walk on. It is read as the completion of a transition and the start of the ordinary work that follows it. Arriving somewhere unrecognised is often noted as distinct: the change has finished, and what it delivered has not yet been identified.

Watching a plane pass overhead from the ground
Standing still while the aircraft moves puts the dreamer outside the transition entirely. It is commonly read as awareness of a departure belonging to someone else, or of a possibility not taken. Some readings connect it to longing without action — the route exists, the dreamer is not on it.
